Video Editing Tutorial: A Glossary

This is a short collection of terms that you will encounter in various video editing tutorials, video editing studios, and film editing software.

Anamorphic: video with an aspect ration of 16:9; almost twice as wide as it is tall

Chromakey: replacing a color in a video with another video; ex. green screening

Compositing: the overlaying of one video over another

Crawl: text that moves horizontally

Cross-fade: the fading out of one clip while another fades in

Cut: the change from one shot to the next

De-interlace: the process of separating interlaced video into two separate fields

Filter: an editing effect that changes the raw video in some manner, usually the color, clarity, or movement

Interlaced: video where scan lines are alternated to create a complete image

Linear editing: Editing footage from film, editing that requires rewinding and fast forwarding

Lip sync: synchronizing of the video and audio

Montage: a series of related video clips set to music

Nonlinear editing: digital editing, editing that does not require fast forwarding and rewinding film

Posterization: the removal of hues of colors; ex. lime green and dark green become the same green

Raw footage: unedited video

Render: the process of compiling all layers of video into a single file

Roll: text that moves vertically

Rough cut: the arrangement of raw clips in the approximate order of the final video

Sepia: the brown color that is associated with old photographs

Sound bite: a short portion of audio

Sound effects: sounds made using common things to emulate the sounds of harder to capture things

Soundtrack: the audio associated with a video

Superimpose: to put one layer of video on top of another

Sweetening: the addition of sound effects and music to video

Timeline editing: digital editing where clips are dragged and dropped into a sequence

Titling: the text portion of videos

Voiceover: narration of videos

Wipe: a transition where one clip slides off the other
